Humble beginings

March 14, 2017, seems as good as day as any to start this blog: the idea has been going round in my head for over a year, the time available to write it has increased since I stopped working for a living at the end of last year and there are more than enough events to comment on. Just today, for example, François Fillon had been placed under formal investigation on suspicion of misusing public funds, Marine Le Pen is accused by the tax authorities of seriously underestimating her assets (no trifling matter in a country in which assets over €1.3 million are subject to a wealth tax) and Jean-Luc Melenchon is at last a serious contender for the presidential elections, having harvested the requisite 500 signatures from the great and the good be able to be on the ballot on April 23.

Those less absorbed in the elections may be interested to know, as reported in Le Monde this evening, that one of France's best known dynasty of chefs, the Troisgros, have closed their famous restaurant opposite the railway station in Roanne (Loire) and opened a newly renovated farmhouse restaurant with a suitably large herb and vegetable garden about 8 km out of town.

Watch this space for further developments!
